I started running around 2001. I use to do a lap of 1 mile at 6am when the kids were in bed and hopefully no one would see me out running!  How long have you been with Caerleon Running Club and how did you come to join us? I’ve been with the club for nearly 5 years. I was previously running with family and friends but then met Carl, the rest is history.   What inspired you to start running? I had always played sports that incorporated running (cricket, badminton, football etc), and used to occasionally take myself off for a run whenever I started to feel unfit. Eventually, in my mid-forties I was less able to perform adequately in those sports – and I found that running, as a sport in it’s own right, was a way to keep active and satisfy a need to test myself. As a founding member, what is your favourite memory of Caerleon Running Club? As […] - [July 2023 - Anniversary Special Questions](https://caerleonrunningclub.co.uk/about-us/member-of-the-month/july-2023-anniversary-special-questions/): July 2023 – Anniversary Special Questions Howard Mason 1. What is your name? Howard Mason 2. What inspired you to start running in the first place? I worked with colleagues (Peter and Kay – former members of the club, albeit briefly), who had run the London Marathon.  They got the bug and entered again and suggested I should give it a go.  I hadn’t really done any running at that point but thought, ifPete and Kay can do it (they weren’t life’s natural athletes), I could too.   I entered the London and got in on my first attempt.  Sadly, as […] - [May 2023](https://caerleonrunningclub.co.uk/about-us/member-of-the-month/may-2023/): May 2023 Tom Newman How long have you been Running? I was considering joining a tennis, rugby or golf club… But I saw a post on social media, which was lucky as I rarely use Facebook 😅   What inspired you to start running? Like many I guess I’ve had various running periods. I was quite a keen 800m runner and cross-country captain in school, but that was in the 80’s so a very long time ago. I ran a bit in my 30’s until I had an ITB issue which kind of moved me onto cycling. This time around I started running again properly in the 1st lock down and joined the club in August 2020.  How long have you been with Caerleon Running Club and how did you come to join us? I joined CRC in 2006 when I came back from living in London. I was inspired to run (outside, as opposed to on the treadmill at the gym) after the 2004 London marathon went past my flat. I say ‘inspired’: by Jade Goody’s half-hearted effort and thought ‘if she can…’ – that made me feel brave enough to kit up and hit the streets. I felt like an impostor, skidding on the discarded orange skins. Fast-forward 2 years I emailed Andrew Taylor about joining a club night, got collared by […] - [January 2024](https://caerleonrunningclub.co.uk/about-us/member-of-the-month/january-2024/): January 2024 Liz Sims How long have you been Running? I have been running for just over two years starting in September 2021. I used the NHS App ‘Couch to 5K’ which was a nine week plan and ran Riverfront Parkrun for the first time on 23rd October 2021. I remember thinking ‘what if I can’t finish!’ Running was not something I was interested in before then. I always thought it was a lonely, boring form of exercise and not for me! I enjoyed team sports, competition and the social aspect that I got from playing netball with Cwmbran and […] - [February 2024](https://caerleonrunningclub.co.uk/about-us/member-of-the-month/february-2024/): February 2024 Isabel Young How long have you been Running? The government makes it very clear that sport has to put safeguards in place. Athletics, along with other sports such as cricket, rugby and swimming, to name but a few, believe the best way to do this is to appoint a Welfare Officer. Caerleon Running Club accepts it has a clear responsibility towards its members. Making sure everyone knows how to report concerns about a member’s welfare is essential. Knowing how to deal with poor practice issues is also vital.
